Two Furs Rescue was created to help kittens and cats in the Lake County Area. The founding members wanted to give the most vulnerable kittens found a chance at a good life.
We also want to educate the community on the importance of spaying/neutering and provide TNR services to Community Cat (aka Colony Cat) Caretakers.
Definitions of some common terms
Feral vs Community vs Colony Cats
- Feral cat – a homeless cat with no one taking care of it. They are weary of humans due to lack of exposure or interaction to people.
- Colony Cats – a group of free-roaming cats living together, either living near a food source or fed by a “caretaker”
- Community Cats – often interchanged with Colony cats, Community cats are a mixture of feral, colony and lost/abandoned cats living together. While some may be weary of humans, they are often “caretaker friendly” meaning they will be semi-friendly with their cate taker.
TNR - Trap, Neuter, Return
In an attempt to manage (and reduce) the feral/community cat populations, the current method that is most commonly used is TNR:
- Trap – humane traps are lent to caretakers to trap cats that cannot be handled.
- Neuter – cats are brought to vets/clinics to be vaccinated, microchipped, and fixed to prevent further unwanted litters. They are often ear-tipped to identify them as part of a community vs a feral cat.
- Returned – cats are returned to their caretaker and community.
Ear-tip: the tip of the left ear is removed while the cat is under anesthesia and being fixed. This allows for a visual identification of community cats without the use of a scanner to read the microchip.
How Two Furs works with the Communities in Lake County
As an all-volunteer rescue, are resources are dependent on donations of time and money. Our goal is to help all caretakers to TNR their cats, but that will only be possible through the generosity of partners and sponsors.
